Dr. Martijn ten Bhömer is a recognized expert in the design, research, and development of intelligent products. He currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechatronics and Robotics at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou. Before this role, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Design and the Director of the Master’s Program in Industrial Design at XJTLU. He earned his PhD in industrial design from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
His primary research areas encompass Human-Computer Interaction, smart textiles and wearables for healthcare, and robotics. Significant contributions to the academic community include publications in prestigious journals such as Human-Computer Interaction and the International Journal of Design, as well as presentations at leading conferences like CHI, TEI, and DIS. His work has been recognized with a grant from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (International Young Scientist) and the title of Key Educator in Science and Education by the Suzhou Municipal Education Bureau. Additionally, he organized and chaired the ArcInTex 2019 international conference in Suzhou, served on the ACM TEI program committee, and was a guest editor for the Journal Behaviour & Information Technology. He has delivered keynote speeches at high-profile venues, including TEDx, Tongji University, and the Smart Garment Industry Forum.
Beyond academia, he co-founded Femooi, a company specializing in smart skincare devices. His extensive industrial experience includes research and development positions at renowned multinational companies such as Microsoft Research UK, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, OMsignal in Canada, and Bambi Medical in the Netherlands.
