Innovating Interaction Strategies for Enhanced ComprehensionACM ISS 2024
Interfaces and visualizations often challenge comprehension, especially as they grow in complexity. Traditional methods—relying on standard inputs like touch, mouse, and keyboard—fall short in addressing the nuanced demands for explainability in complex systems. This workshop explores innovative interaction strategies towards making interfaces more self-explanatory, focusing on the development and refinement of new devices and input modalities. We aim to gather researchers, designers, and practitioners to exchange ideas and explore interaction techniques that promote clearer understanding and transparency across diverse applications. This collaborative effort seeks to advance interactive systems that improve explanation and user comprehension in digital environments.
Call for Participation
Join us for a transformative exploration at the “Innovating Interaction Strategies for Enhanced Comprehension” workshop, part of ISS 2024. We invite researchers, practitioners, and designers to submit research papers or early work or ideas that relate to this topic - ranging in length from 1 to 4 pages long in the standard ISS submission format, excluding references. The paper length should be commensurate with content.
Topics
Topics discussed may include but are not limited to:
- Novel interaction techniques for enhancing explanation and user comprehension in complex interfaces.
- Exploration of advanced input modalities—such as touchscreens, trackpads, and buttons—and their roles in enhancing interactive design.
- Design processes and strategies for multi-modal interactions that support navigation and understanding of intricate data visualizations.
- Empirical studies on the effectiveness of interactive tools in enhancing comprehension and user engagement.
- Personalized interactions that adapt to individual user needs and preferences for explanations.
- Making explanations accessible to people with disabilities, including auditory, cognitive, visual, and motor impairments.
- Examination of how cultural differences affect interaction preferences and needs when it comes to explanations
- Innovative uses of biometric data, such as eye tracking to adjust explanations interfaces in real-time.
- Research into how users’ emotional states influence their interaction with innovative explanations and vice versa.
Submission Guidelines
We invite submissions of papers, ranging from 1 to 4 pages in length (excluding references), that explore innovative ideas, including both early-stage and ongoing research, or work that has been recently completed. Each paper will undergo a peer-review process to ensure quality and relevance, although they will not be published in a formal proceedings. All accepted papers will be compiled and made available to all participants ahead of the workshop, facilitating pre-event engagement and discussion.
